Congratulations to Dr. George Chiampas for his authorship on “Cardiac arrest during long-distance running races” which was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

As Medical Director of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and the Shamrock Shuffle as well as Assistant Team Physician for Northwestern University, ensuring the welfare of athletic competition participants is one of Dr. Chiampas’ highest priorities. This study focused on the factors that contribute to cardiac arrest associated with participation in marathon and half-marathon races in the United States over a 10 year period.

Dr. Chiampas and his colleagues found that the incidence of cardiac arrest during long-distance running races is very low, but that the incidence was significantly higher during marathons than during half-marathons and among men than among women. Their research also found that most of the sudden cardiac arrests could be attributed to specific, underlying heart diseases, which occur primarily in the male participants.

This ground breaking research now gives clinicians who are evaluating potential race participants additional information that can help make these types of races safer.
